In 1980s Indiana, a group of young friends witness supernatural forces and secret government operations. Steve Perry, the former lead singer of Journey, has said that the fourth season of Stranger Things will remix Journey’s 1980s hit “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart).” did pretty much what he originally wanted done in the 1980s, but the technology was lacking. Perry was so impressed that he even helped create a remix. Many episodes feature people “interrupting”; someone is talking on a two-way radio or CB, meaning one person is talking/transmitting and the other person is transmitting to interrupt them and the other person hears this interruption and stops transmitting. This has been done multiple times with children’s CB radios and radios used by police. Those radios – the CB and police radios of the show’s era – don’t work like that.

If you’re sending and someone else is transmitting, you won’t hear it. The opening credits and fonts of Stranger Things mimic the brightness and look of 80s TV series opening credits. I think a lot of people have said a lot about all the movie and TV references in this series and how it recreates the 80s with all its vice and glamour. I won’t add that.
development arcs that seem enjoyable but sometimes drag the series down a bit
With the release of season 2, I’d just like to say that both seasons are very different animals. Think of it as the difference between the original Aliens and the Aliens sequel: where season 1 was more about the unknown and unseen horrors and the mystery behind the backstory, season 2 has more straight-up action and horror with attitude. Therefore, a fan of the series should probably see season 2 as a separate work of fiction, rather than a true continuation and spirit of season 1. The writers are moving the story forward and we are getting some great entertainment, but the new season has to be judged on its own merits. EDIT: Season 3 proved to be a huge shift in tone for the series. Maybe it is really hard to keep a secret when much of the “world” of Stranger Things has already given away many of its secrets, but the overall “feel”; the series has taken a different turn.
and this strange cocktail doesn’t work today
Maybe the writers are just out of 80s; tear-jerking models. Season 1 was heavily inspired by supernatural horror like Poltergeist. Season 2 took a lot of cues from "Enduring Traits" like “Gremlins” or “Aliens”. Season 3 now uses 80's Low budget gore and zombie movies with a dash of spy comedy (and fight scenes that look like they came out of Die Hard). All of these genres didn’t mix very well in the 80s. That’s not to say that season 3 is bad.
story elements and tropes
It simply relies on characters created in previous seasons that used very different 80s characters. It’s almost like seeing Darth Vader in an Indiana Jones movie. Both work separately but not together. Ultimately, season 3 is an overly transparent attempt to tap into a new field of nostalgia, but it doesn’t work in the context of previous seasons. Whether they’re exploring the stars, escaping dystopias, or making the world a better place, these women are the stuff of science fiction.
